SELECTING A LAWYER

When I opened my office I needed an accountant. I asked around and I was given the name of an accountant. I used him for several years. He took a little longer to do things than I would have liked but he was reasonably priced and he got the job done. Then one year I received a notice from the governing body of accountants informing me that my accountant’s practice was no longer operating. It seems he was not running his office as smoothly as he was dealing with my files. So, I needed another accountant. I was in a similar position to clients looking for a family law lawyer - how do you get a good professional?

I asked around. I asked other lawyers. I have been working with my current accountant – Michael Brown at Parker, Prins, Lebano Chartered Accountants - for several years now. I am very happy with his work.

Word of mouth is a good way to go. It is a time-honoured way of finding a professional - one that worked for me in obtaining an accountant. That is how I found my car mechanic, dentist, carpet guy etc.

A lot of people look on the internet now. That is why I have put a lot of information on this website - to give you an idea of who I am and how I practice. I have had many clients over the years who review the web-site then send me an email and say they want to retain me.

There are referral services available e.g. Lawyer Referral Service operated by the Law Society of Upper Canada, employee assistance referral programs etc.

"I encourage clients to speak to lawyers. I offer a one-half hour consultation. I want to give you the opportunity to see if you want me to be your lawyer."

I also want to see if I think we would be a good fit to working together. If I can not work with you for some reason then I can certainly provide referrals. Given that I have been doing this for over 27 years I know virtually everyone.

I receive many files in mid-stream. That is, a client has a current lawyer but is not content with his or her services. If you are really and truly not happy with the services from your lawyer then get a new lawyer. There are lawyers out there who think that the way family law files should be resolved is that each party gets a lawyer, pays that lawyer a lot of money to have a fight in court that lasts a long time. Personally, I do not feel that way.

If you want a lawyer who has over 27 years experience, practices exclusively in the area of family law and estates, has a solid reputation as a lawyer who resolves files, listens to clients, is available to talk to clients, has an excellent support staff and is focused on getting you in and out then I am the lawyer for you.

Also, I offer a one-half hour free telephone consultation.
